American Taliban captured??

gadahn

There appears to be conflicting reports out today as to the capture of treasonous American Taliban Adam Gadahn. From the AP this afternoon.

KARACHI, Pakistan – The American-born spokesman for al-Qaida has been arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in the southern city of Karachi, two officers and a government official said Sunday as video emerged of him urging U.S. Muslims to attack their own country.

The arrest of Adam Gadahn represents a major victory in the U.S.-led battle against al-Qaida and will be taken as a sign that Pakistan, criticized in the past for being an untrustworthy ally, is cooperating more fully with Washington. It follows the recent detentions of several Afghan Taliban commanders in Karachi, including the movement’s No. 2 commander.

U.S. officials did not immediately confirm Gadahn’s capture.

Gadahn has appeared in more than half a dozen al-Qaida videos, taunting and threatening the West and calling for its destruction. A U.S. court charged Gadahn with treason in 2006, making him the first American to face such a charge in more than 50 years.

He was arrested in the sprawling southern metropolis of Karachi in recent days, two officers who took part in the operation said. A senior government official also confirmed the arrest, but said it happened Sunday. The discrepancy could not immediately be resolved.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The first report released from the AP was at approximately 4:30 EST. CBS released the following about an hour after, citing confusion over the militants identity and stating that the arrest was in fact not Adam Gadahn.

An “important Taliban militant” was arrested today in Pakistan. But that is where the confusion started.

Earlier it was reported by Pakistani media that intelligence agents had arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al Qaeda, in an operation in the southern city of Karachi.

It was further reported by the Associated Press and Reuters that Gadahn had been arrested, sourcing security officials.

CBS News was told by sources in the Pakistan government that it was Gadahn, even after U.S. officials refused to confirm it was the California native for whom a $1 million reward has been posted.

Now, CBS News’ Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad writes that earlier reports the detained individual was Gadahn proved false. According to a Pakistan security official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity, the arrested individual is in fact “a Taliban militant leader who is known as Abu Yahya.”

The official said evidence compiled from an interrogation of the suspect and information exchanged with U.S. officials verified the man’s identify.

The reassessment only added to the confusion surrounding the arrest of a man earlier described by other unnamed Pakistani security officials as Gadahn.

“In the light of our latest information, I can say, this is not looking like Gadahn. But it is still the arrest of an important Taliban militant,” said the Pakistani security official who spoke to CBS News late Sunday.

Looks like confusion is reigning the day on this story. Adam Gadahn for those who are not aware is the American-born spokesperson for Al-Qaeda, who has been prominently featured in numerous propaganda videos railing against the United States and calling for its destruction. Most recently, Gadahn released a video praising the Fort Hood massacre by Major Nidal Hassan. Hassan of course went on a shooting rampage at the largest US military facility and murdered 14 people on November 5, 2009.

JammieWearingFool has continuous updates on the story and other rumors surrounding it.

Updates Here (Samaa News), Here (Dawn.com). Many others are reporting the capture. We will have to wait for the US Military to confirm it is Adam Gadahn. From the GateWayPundit, here is a video of Gadahn from a few years back. HotAir says bummer, wasn’t him.

This man is a traitor and should be executed as such. Let’s just hope it does end up being Adam Gadahn who was captured today in Karachi.

Obama Nation: One Year Later

Has it really been one year?

Sure, we all remember President Obama’s inauguration. Two million people crowded the National Mall, he placed his hand on the Bible, Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed the oath of office, Dick Cheney looked like Mr. Potter from It’s A Wonderful Life, Obama gave a speech, and pundits across the radio and television dial hailed the coming of the Golden Age of liberalism.

Let me check my calendar… Yep, that was January 20th, 2009.  One year ago.

So what happened?  Well, let’s recap:

  • ECONOMICS – In the middle of the Great Recession, Obama unleashed the $787 Billion stimulus plan.  Obama’s people said without the plan, unemployment would go up to nine percent.  We should consider ourselves to be so lucky.  Conservatives said that the bill would increase unemployment, and sure enough, they were right.  But hey, we did save / create a few jobs in some Congressional districts.  It’s a shame those districts don’t exist.
  • FOREIGN POLICY – I suppose Obama’s big Foreign Policy moment came during his speech in Cairo, where he tried to seek common ground with Muslims.  The speech was well-received by both sides of the aisle.  A short time later, Obama showed his support for freedom-seeking Muslims by delivering a rousing speech where he proclaimed that America stood together with the young men and women of Iran who were protesting the sham elections and… oh wait, that last part didn’t happen.  Instead, while Iran was burning, Obama was silent, but at least he did get the chance  to get ice cream.  It wasn’t the first time that ice cream played a part in Obama’s foreign policy, four Gitmo detainees were sent to Bermuda.  And yes, they were allowed to get ice cream.  But no sprinkles!  By the way, the “ice cream diplomacy” should not be confused with the “hot dog diplomacy”, or the infamous beer summit.  Other highlights from Obama’s first year: saying that we would not abandon our missile shield in Poland if Iran continues to pose a threat.  That worked for awhile, until the Russians asked us to change our plans.  We caved to the Russians.  Right after we found out that Iran could build a nuke.
  • WAR – I haven’t heard much about it, but I’m pretty sure we’re still in Iraq.  After spending the campaign telling America how George Bush screwed up that war, Obama carried over Bush’s policy.  He also spent the campaign talking about how Afghanistan was the “good” war, then once elected President, he proceeded to dither.  Months after Gen. McChrystal asked for more troops, Obama complied.  Somewhat.  He pledged 30,000 more soldiers, but added a withdrawal date.  In a related note, if the leader of the Taliban said that he was going to train / send more terrorists to reek havoc on the world, but only for 18 months (and then they’d have to stop), wouldn’t it sound like that, I dunno, like he was dealing from a position of weakness?
  • TERRORISM – Unfortunately, the terrorists (as a whole), aren’t dealing from a position of weakness.  One-third of the terrorist attacks against Americans occurred in 2009. We saw two attacks on our soil, at Fort Hood and in on a plane above Detroit.  Thankfully, the Detroit bomber was incompetent (much like another would-be terrorist bomber from 40 years ago.  Yes, I went there).  Both incidents happened because America missed the warning signs.  Let us pray Obama can rectify these mistakes in 2010.  As for the “victory over terrorists front”, kudos to Obama for giving the thumbs-up to an operation that rescued kidnapped sea captains from the hands of the Somali pirates.  We sent the right message, and that was the last we had to deal with them.  Oh wait. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t joke about this.  Piracy is no laughing matter.
  • HEALTH CARE – And yes, we’ve reached the elephant-in-the-room.  While Americans lacking health insurance is a serious problem, Americans rejected Obama’s solution (e.g., usurping the entire health care system, creating massive new entitlement programs, and basically saddling our great-great-great grandchildren with a debt they could never hope to repay.  And for a more on this disaster of a bill, I refer you to my older brother’s column on the subject.).  Where would Obama be if he didn’t try to usurp one-seventh of our national economy?  Well, for starters, he probably wouldn’t be sitting under 50% in the approval polls.  Second, he probably wouldn’t have lost his filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.  Third, Democrats wouldn’t be quaking in their boots.

So, I suppose that takes us back to today.  January 20th, 2010.  One year ago, Barack Obama entered the presidency with dreams and visions of a New America.  And one day ago, voters from the bluest of blue states got their chance to say they don’t want to be a part of that vision.  Meanwhile, the rest of the country salivates.  On November 2nd, 2010, they’ll get their chance, too.

Welcome to Obamastan by Jordan B. Rickards

We are now eight years into the War in Afghanistan and there is not a single justification for its continuation — much less escalation — that withstands scrutiny.

If this war was about bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice, we would not be in Afghanistan but Pakistan, where most credible intelligence indicates he and his minions are hiding.  If the President’s concern is national security, he would secure our national borders.  If the concern is the Taliban, we would be fighting against the Iranians who send the Taliban the weapons they use to kill our soldiers. The pundit class can argue all day long about whether the United States should go to war with Iran, but ultimately that discussion is academic. We are already at war with Iran whether or not we choose to acknowledge it.

So why do we continue in Afghanistan? Because wars like this one take on a life of their own, over time becoming circularly self-justifying. The war must continue, so goes the logic, because we’ve already invested so many years, so many lives, so much money, so much political capital, that to not see it through would be to waste all of the above. Thus the President tells us that “we have to finish the job.” But what is the job at this point other than to finish?

On December 10, 2009, President Obama will be in Oslo accepting his Nobel Peace Prize. That will likely be of little consolation to the now one hundred thousand U.S. troops who will remain in Afghanistan, committed to fighting for at least three more years what is now President Obama’s war. And then on to the next.

Long Winded Obama puts cadet to sleep

I was hoping this video would pop up on the internet, I noticed this last night as I watched the Presidents speech at West Point.

He offered nothing new, no real details (other than a withdrawal date) and spoke in generalities and platitudes that seemed to drag on forever. I know I was nodding off myself there for a minute.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews: West Point “Enemy Camp”

Always good to switch on over to Americas very first Communist news network to see what sort of audacious stupidity would flow out of the mouths of their exceptional trio of primetime pundits.

Their always insightful *sarc* brand of analysis came in handy tonight following President Obamas speech to the West Point cadets about his Afghan strategy and the impending troop surge.

Chris “Tingles” Matthews had a particularly interesting gem tonight, where he referred to the United States Military Academy at West Point, as the “Enemy Camp”. Perhaps nothing more than a poor choice of words, or maybe his real belief, I am waiting for the day when GE, NBC and the heads of these companies will come crashing down on the head of this moron for his blatant stupidity. Check the video below.

From Newsbusters, here is the transcript.

However, Matthews also said he saw a lot of skepticism among some of the older audience members at West Point, which he called “the enemy camp” and “a strange venue.” (emphasis added)

“It seems like in this case, there isn’t a lot of excitement,” Matthews said. “I watched the cadets, they were young kids – men and women who were committed to serving their country professionally it must be said, as officers. And, I didn’t see much excitement. But among the older people there, I saw, if not resentment, skepticism. I didn’t see a lot of warmth in that crowd out there. The president chose to address tonight and I thought it was interesting. He went to maybe the enemy camp tonight to make his case. I mean, that’s where Paul Wolfowitz used to write speeches for, back in the old Bush days. That’s where he went to rabble rouse the “we’re going to democratize the world” campaign back in ‘02. So, I thought it was a strange venue.”

Even When Moore’s Right He’s Wrong by Jordan Bennett Rickards

In an open letter to the President, filmmaker Michael Moore recently wrote that the “worst possible thing” about the troop increase will be to “destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in [Obama]. With just one speech tomorrow [Obama] will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of [his] campaign into disillusioned cynics.” That’s the worst thing? Increased cynicism? A recognition of the reality that our most powerful politician is, well, a politician? What about all the troops who are going to die as a result of the continuation of this war? Isn’t that much worse than liberal disenchantment with their messiah? Do liberals really consider Obama-mania to be the highest morality?

Maybe it’s time liberals stop looking at Obama as something ethereal and finally see him for who he is: a unique hybrid of leftist academic and Chicago-style politician. In short, a human being, one who has come to believe in and revere his own myth, one who genuinely thinks that his words count more than his actions and results. Thus, he has become the master of misdirection. Consider:

He says he’s trying to fix the deficit, but he has increased spending exponentially.

He says he trying to save Medicare, but his health plan will cut half a trillion dollars from it.

He says he wants to reduce instances of AIDS in the United States, but he lifted the ban on travel for people with the disease, thus introducing more carriers into the country.

He says he’s trying to make inner cities safer, but he reduced the mandatory sentences for crack dealers, thus releasing more drug dealers back into black communities.

He says he wants to liberate minority kids from failing schools, but opposes school choice.

He said he had no interest in running the auto industry, but then he nationalized two auto companies and installed his own people at the top.

He said he would put an end to politics as usual, but has been more accessible to lobbyists than any of his predecessors.

He said he wants to make healthcare more affordable, but his health plan would increase demands and regulations on private insurers.

He said he wouldn’t increase taxes, but his health plan will penalize anyone who doesn’t purchase health coverage.

And now President Peace Prize says he wants to end the war in Afghanistan, but he is escalating it.

There is a word for this sort of thing, and it is not “hope” or “change.” It is “hypocrisy,” and this President has mastered it in an alarmingly short time.

Sen. Cornyn to Obama: Take ownership of Afghanistan

senator-cornynShortly after former Vice President Dick Cheney blasted the administration for “dithering” in Afghanistan, Senator John Cornyn (R-AZ) fired off a letter to President Obama encouraging him to make a decision on our course in Afghanistan, and to quit blaming his predecessor. He noted that such actions tend to embolden our enemies, and put Americans at a much higher risk around the world. Bravo to Senator Cornyn for this letter, he is as usual, right on the money. Here is the full text.

–The full text of the letter is below–

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama:

I am dismayed by your seeming indecision regarding the way ahead in Afghanistan. I fully appreciate the importance of thorough deliberation on a matter of such importance but, at some point, open-ended deliberation evolves into hesitation and procrastination. Stalled decision-making creates a dilemma for our allies, who are trying to gauge our long-term intentions in the region prior to committing their own forces and other resources.

The assessment by General Stanley McChrystal, commander of the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, makes plainly clear that a commitment of additional forces to the Afghanistan theater of operations is necessary. He states that, “success will require a discrete ‘jump’ to gain the initiative . . . .” I understand that he has formally made this request, but that you have yet to decide whether to grant it. I urge you in the strongest terms to move ahead with the “jump” in forces and other resources, as requested by General McChrystal. You handpicked him to carry out this complex task and lead our troops in Afghanistan, and I applaud you for that – he is the right person for the job. The counterinsurgency strategy you announced in March is the right one and, when put to use thus far in Afghanistan, it has proven effective. I ask you to now heed General McChrystal’s advice to stick with that strategy and give him what he needs to win. Every moment that goes by without deploying the needed reinforcements to Afghanistan puts those men and women in uniform already on the ground there at greater risk, and that fact requires no additional analysis.

While I recognize the importance of Afghanistan’s coming run-off elections and the need to ensure the legitimacy of its government, our national security decisions should never be contingent on such events, which are beyond our control. These elections should not delay your decision on General McChrystal’s troop request.

In the bigger picture, I am concerned that indecision may be seen by our enemies – and not just those in Afghanistan – as a lack of U.S. national resolve. This could potentially put Americans in unnecessary danger. History instructs that, when our enemies perceive a lack of U.S. national resolve, they sometimes act on it.

I worry that your administration considers the Afghanistan mission merely an unwanted distraction from your sweeping domestic “change” agenda. To the contrary, Afghanistan is now the central front in the Global War on Terror, and our national security depends on winning there. It is past time for your administration to dispense with talk of “inheriting” problems – both foreign and domestic – from your predecessor. Instead, I urge you to commit your administration to success in Afghanistan and act decisively to that end. The United States is in the lead in Afghanistan; as our commander-in-chief, I urge you to take ownership of this mission.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

Hoyer: GOP abandoned Afghanistan for the past 7 years

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer got a tad bit testy today with Republicans who are shouting from the roof tops about President Obama’s dithering on the Afghanistan situation (It has been I believe 76 days now since General McChrystals recommendation for additional troops). Hoyer sounded off today on the GOP complaints about the administrations stall tactics on the matter. From the Hill.com

Hoyer tore into Republicans — including House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) — for criticizing Obama’s approach to a war Hoyer said Republicans “abandoned.”

“My Republican colleagues, of course, abandoned their focus on Afghanistan for seven years — seven years — and let it drift, and did not resource it properly, and did not succeed,” a terse Hoyer said at his weekly news conference.

“For the Republicans who essentially diverted the attention of defeating terrorism in [Afghanistan] on the incorrect assertion that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, frankly, [Republicans' charges] don’t move me mightily as you can tell,” Hoyer said in response to a question about how quickly he would like to see Obama decide whether or not to increase the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

“Gen. McChrystal’s assessment says that without timely reinforcements our efforts to deny al Qaeda and the Taliban a safe haven in Afghanistan may end in failure,” Boehner said in a statement released on Monday. It followed up on similar statements he made last week.

“It’s time for the Obama administration to give our commander on the ground the resources he needs to better protect our troops and achieve the goals the president outlined in March.”

Hoyer, who acknowledged he was irritated over the comments, said that such criticism amounted to hypocrisy.

So let me get this straight. I’m going to work this out in my head right here…so follow me. President outlines a strategy in March. Gives the General an order to give an assessment. General gives assessment. Assessment strategy alienates the Presidents hard-core anti-war, anti-American military base. President votes present on the subject. Democrats leap to the defense of the “present” vote by blaming Bush.

Glad to see our Congress can have logical debate.  Instead its, you did nothing so we will do nothing…brilliance inside the beltway I tell ya…

stenyhoyerDear Mr. Hoyer,

The situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated steadily under the watch of BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. In as much, he has refused to deal with the problem that is steadily growing and spiraling out of control. That actually has nothing to do with George W. Bush. George Bush for the record, successfully handled two wars simultaneously, employing a strategy in Iraq that stabilized the situation and led to the ability of American troops to be drawn down. During that time, while admittedly Afghanistan was on the back burner, it was controlled and when the situation deteriorated it was dealt with swiftly.

There is no good reasoning for sitting on this decision. But wait, as is always the case, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has a theory, and by the way I have noticed the President has yet to make any sort of statement to the American public about the Afghanistan, and what is going into his decision making process. On every other issue close to his heart the President has been on the campaign trail touting his plan, his vision for hopey changey…but silence on Afghanistan. But I digress, I’m sure you are all waiting for what Rahm has to say on the matter

“It would be reckless to make a decision on U.S. troop levels if in fact you haven’t done a thorough analysis of whether in fact there’s an Afghan partner ready to fill that space that U.S. troops would create and become a true partner in governing,” said the president’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel.

Emanuel gave no timetable for a presidential decision in Afghanistan. He said the White House plans to have additional strategy sessions this week and next, extending a review process that began after the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, reported that more U.S. troops are required.

This falls right in line with what notorious anti-war, anti-military Senator John Kerry had to say on the matter as well.

So apparently it takes 76 days for a careful assessment of the strategy that was just announced just over 6 months ago.

Obama knows he is in a politically vulnerable situation. He is conflicted on what to do, I mean you can’t just escalate a war after winning the Nobel Peace Prize can you? The politics being played on the Afghanistan conflict is causing the loss of American life, and the time has come to quit playing games, quit blaming Bush and move along with a strategy.

Administration/Congress at war with insurance; still shaky on Afghanistan

Apparently, the Obama administration and Congress are at war with everyone, but can’t seem to make a decision on the people that are actually waging war on our nation. Remember Afghanistan? No decision yet (its been now a month and a half) on the Generals request for more troops and a winning strategy in Afghanistan. But hey, bigger fish to fry right? I mean, the evil health insurance industry should be the focus of our attention.

From Politico.

The long-simmering tension between insurers and congressional Democrats is erupting into open warfare, with lawmakers stepping up their push to revoke a key federal protection for the insurance industry.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday called for an amendment to the health care reform bill that would remove the long-standing antitrust exemption for insurers, echoing a push by other Democrats to crack down on the industry.

“The health insurance’s antitrust exemption is one of the worst accidents of American history,” Schumer said. “It deserves a lot of the blame for the huge rise in premiums that has made health insurance so unaffordable. It is time to end this special status and bring true competition to the health insurance industry.”

Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill last month to remove the anti-trust exemption and convened a hearing Wednesday, where Schumer called for eliminating the exemption as part of the health bill working its way through Congress.

Schumer’s push comes on the heels of a controversial industry-sponsored report released over the weekend that makes the case that insurance premiums will go up by as much as $4,000 per family by 2019 if the Senate Finance Committee legislation is signed into law. The release of that report by the industry group America’s Health Insurance Plans sparked angry blowback from Democrats in both chambers.

….

I guess the insurance industry is stirring the pot,” Schumer said, in response to suggestions from the industry that Leahy called the hearing in retaliation. “Maybe because the insurance industry blundered so badly on Monday, it gives us greater chance to pass it.”

Health insurance officials dismissed the effort as a “political ploy.”

“Health insurance is one of the most regulated industries in America at both the federal and state level,” said Robert Zirkelbach, a spokesman for America’s Health Insurance Plans. “McCarran-Ferguson has nothing to do with competition in the health insurance market. The focus on this issue is a political ploy designed to distract attention away from the real issue of rising health care costs.”

Still, the push is likely to gather momentum as Democrats try to find a way to lash back at the insurance industry — whose report was viewed as a last-minute attempt to scuttle health care reform just days before Tuesday’s critical Senate Finance Committee vote. The legislation there was approved 14-9, with Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine voting yes and giving reform efforts a boost.

Taliban/Al-qaeda getting assist from global warming

What else can possibly be blamed on global warming? You guessed it, terrorist groups and drug lords. From ABC News, Charlie Gibson feeding the frenzy of global warming, and giving President Obama some cover as he continues to not make a decision on Afghanistan. Win-Win for the state-run media. Roll the tape.

Thanks to Newsbusters for a partial transcript.

Blakemore began his report: This study by eleven U.S. generals and admirals shows how global warming is playing into the hands of terrorist groups like the Taliban in many countries often because of worsening drought.

After some background from one of the CNA study’s supervisors, former Army chief of staff Gen. Gordon R. Smith, Blakemore continued:

BLAKEMORE: Afghanistan, eleven years into a drought with no end in sight. Snows vanishing from mountains that used to pour melt water down into orchards and fields now leaving young men with no money or work. Arian Sharifi worked with ABC News there, and recently in the Afghan government.

ARIAN SHARIFI, GRADUATE STUDENT AT PRINCETON UNIVERSITY: A lot of more people — young male — who are unemployed with nothing to do, and so the Taliban basically seems an attractive thing for them to join. The Taliban pays most of the fighters. In other ways they are protecting the poppy crops.

BLAKEMORE: And the poppy crops, which the Taliban encourage and tax, are making them and their al Qaeda allies very rich, an estimated half a billion dollars a year. Many farmers say they are now growing opium poppies because they need little water, good in the lengthening drought. So the rising temperatures are helping both heroin traffickers and their Taliban and al Qaeda supporters.

So, according to Blakemore, the problems in Afghanistan — drought, heroin production and trafficking, unemployment, AND the growth in the Taliban and al Qaeda — are directly linked to global warming.

Kind of ironic when you consider the BBC report that came out the same day as this little tidbit from our friends at ABC.

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

According to research conducted by Professor Don Easterbrook from Western Washington University last November, the oceans and global temperatures are correlated.

The oceans, he says, have a cycle in which they warm and cool cyclically. The most important one is the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO).

For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was in a positive cycle, that means warmer than average. And observations have revealed that global temperatures were warm too.

But in the last few years it has been losing its warmth and has recently started to cool down.

These cycles in the past have lasted for nearly 30 years.

So could global temperatures follow? The global cooling from 1945 to 1977 coincided with one of these cold Pacific cycles.

mlb_a_coors_field1_300In a totally unrelated story, the Major League Baseball playoffs had to be put on hold for a night as snow fell in Denver, postponing game 3 of the Phillies-Rockies playoff series. This of course following one of the coolest summers on record in numerous spots across the United States. I’m sure Nobel Laureate Al Goracle will be able to explain this in the grand scheme of things. I mean, Mother Earth is burning up, this must just be an abberation in the process.

Right, its not a scheme…its real.

Palin: We must win in Afghanistan

palinhotThe media’s favorite punching bag has inserted herself back into the debate. She has been picking her spots quite well. Mrs. Palin (who has clearly asserted herself as the complete opposite of Obama) wrote a short statement on the Afghanistan problem for her Facebook audience. She takes a solid swipe at the leadership (or lack thereof) of the President, waiting to see (much like myself) if the President will continue voting present, or will stand up and win this fight.

For two years as a candidate, Senator Obama called for more resources for the war in Afghanistan and warned about the consequences of failure. As President, he announced a comprehensive new counterinsurgency strategy and handpicked the right general to execute it. Now General McChrystal is asking for additional troops to implement the strategy announced by President Obama in March. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers in harm’s way in Afghanistan right now. We owe it to all those brave Americans serving in uniform to give them the tools they need to complete their mission.

We can win in Afghanistan by helping the Afghans build a stable representative state able to defend itself. And we must do what it takes to prevail. The stakes are very high. The 9/11 attacks were planned in Afghanistan, and if we are not successful there, al Qaeda will once again find a safe haven, the Taliban will impose its cruelty on the Afghan people, and Pakistan will be less stable.

Our allies and our adversaries are watching to see if we have the staying power to protect our interests in Afghanistan. I recently joined a group of Americans in urging President Obama to devote the resources necessary in Afghanistan and pledged to support him if he made the right decision. Now is not the time for cold feet, second thoughts, or indecision — it is the time to act as commander-in-chief and approve the troops so clearly needed in Afghanistan.

- Sarah Palin

Might I add here that the strategy that is apparently the one being debated, yes the one being pushed by the administrations crazy uncle Joe Biden, was tried and has failed in Iraq. Only when we supplied our military with what they needed did the situation stabilize, and the violence all but ceased.

Marc Ambinder seems to agree (in a very non-commital way, must be a liberal thing), and then of course there is General Wesley Clark who shows pretty clearly that his loyalties are now with politics, and no longer the military where he made his career.

Republican ready to support Obama on Afghanistan

obama_smugIf only he would be a strong leader and do what is best for our nation, and best for the situation on the ground. Currently the President is voting present on the issue, and in the process losing support from both sides. The commander on the ground has given his assessment, it is backed by the architect of the success on the ground in Iraq. The Pentagon agrees with General McChrystal’s assessment. For some reason, the President can’t make a decision. The lead story on Human Events.com today comes from Reps. Tom Price and Mike Coffman. Brilliantly stated if I do say so.

Right now, as commander-in-chief, President Obama must lead on Afghanistan, or we risk losing what he has described as the “central front” in our battle against al Qaeda.

This past March, the President laid out his mission for the war: “to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to prevent their return to either country in the future.” And he inserted his top commander to pull it off, General Stanley McChrystal.

At this moment, the situation in this fragile region is deteriorating. The insurgency is growing more effective and momentum is not on our side. Deaths of American soldiers are on the rise, and our troops lack the resources to turn the tide.  General McChrystal, has recently reported that unless the President provides the full resources of a counter-insurgency strategy and does so quickly, we risk “mission failure” within 12 months. This is a view supported by General David Petraeus, now head of US Central Command.

So far, the President has been hesitant to make any decision at all and has seemingly put General McChrystal’s request for additional troops in a drawer.  With his top commander making quite clear what is needed, it appears President Obama is more in search of a political solution at home than a military strategy for Afghanistan.  As delay and indecision put the lives of our troops in danger, the time for the President to act is now.

Some, however, in the White House – most notably Vice President Biden – believe the U.S. should draw down ground operations, focus on training Afghan security forces, and rely on targeted air strikes against suspected al Qaeda members. They advocate for a type of small-footprint counter-terrorism strategy. Such a proposal may provide comfort and political cover to liberals opposed to providing more resources in Afghanistan, but it is a prescription for failure.

MoveOn.org advocating US surrender in Afghanistan

I have a confession to make. I am an online member of MoveOn.org. Before you click the X and never come back to the Political Fish let me explain why. It is somewhat of a covert operation to find  out what these useful idiots are all about, and I have to admit I get some real gem emails. Just like I did tonight. MoveOn PAC is circulating a petition calling on Obama to pull out of Afghanistan in the midst of everything going on around the world, the ever growing threat of nuclear proliferation, the Taliban gaining momentum on the ground in Afghanistan. The morons over at MoveOn are advocating now that we get out…and get out quickly. Do these people think we are the French?? Remember just a few years ago the bumper sticker that read “These colors don’t run”?

Check out the email and decide for yourself whether or not these people have any common sense or even live in the same world that we do.

Dear MoveOn member,
U.S. policy in Afghanistan has reached a pivotal moment. President Obama is poised to make a critical decision about the Afghanistan war in the next few weeks. And there’s a big debate happening right now about what to do.1
Pro-war advocates both inside and outside the administration—including John McCain and Joe Lieberman—are calling for a big military escalation.2 The general in charge of Afghanistan is expected to request tens of thousands more troops, and that may just be the beginning.3 They’re cranking up the pressure for an immediate surge.
But other powerful voices are urging caution: Vice President Biden and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have raised real concerns about the idea of sending more troops to Afghanistan without a clear strategy4, as have Democrats in Congress.5 And a majority of Americans oppose increasing troop levels.6
Can sign this petition to the White House and Congress telling them we need a clear military exit strategy—not tens of thousands more US troops stuck in a quagmire? Clicking below will add your name:
The petition says simply, “We need a clear military exit strategy for Afghanistan.”
Some administration officials are arguing for a smaller, nimbler approach focused on counterterrorism. But cheerleaders for the war refuse to acknowledge that there could be any viable strategy other than a bigger and bigger military footprint. So they’re trotting out the same tired old lines and questioning the motives of those who disagree with them.7
They figure they can cut off any debate about our ultimate goals in Afghanistan and the region. But President Obama has consistently shown a willingness to stand up for his more thoughtful approach to foreign policy, and that’s what he needs to do here, too.
The hawks are making their position heard. Now, the majority of Americans—those of us who are for as quick and as responsible an end to the war as possible—need to make our voices heard, too.

I guess our friends over at MoveOn failed to learn much from the Iraqi surge strategy that effectively ended the violence in Iraq and enabled the fledgeling government to finally take hold and gain control over its security. They have also failed to listen to their own commander-in-chief who has said that withdrawal from Afghanistan is not an option. Obama stated unequivocally in the campaign that Afghanistan was top priority and more attention needed to be paid to the conflict. Now is the time for decision making.

Win or lose? Cut and Run or stay and win? What will it be?

Gates: Taliban momentum due to lack of troops

From my estimation, this type of pressure being applied directly to the President by way of the US military seems unprecedented. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated very bluntly today what the problem in Afghanistan is all about. From Reuters:

The Taliban has the momentum in Afghanistan now because of the inability of the United States and its allies to put enough troops into the country, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Monday

So my question is, why does the Pentagon feel it needs to publicly pressure the Commander-in-Chief? I think the answer is pretty clear. They are well aware that we have a President who is, and has been voting present on the issue of Afghanistan, unwilling to make a decisive commitment one way or another.

Win or Lose. What will it be Mr. President?
