Pro Life?? – Updated 1/29/10
Dr. George Tiller, a well known late term abortion provider in the Wichita Kansas area, was gunned down this morning on his way into church, where he was serving as a church usher (I will get to that later).
In a move that will certainly damage the entire pro-life movement this gunmen (who I truly hope acted alone) went after Dr. Tiller in his place of worship, the Reformation Lutheran Church. Dr. Tiller was kind of a lightning rod for the anti-abortion groups, as he was one of only a few late-term abortion doctors operating in the country.
While Dr. Tiller was certainly not a life to be celebrated, the cowardly act by this gunmen will help only by giving the pro-life movement a black eye. Its disgusting to think that you can advance a movement in favor of life by taking the law into your own hands and killing. And to do it while he was in a church just takes me beyond the anger and into a level of irate.
Do the ends justify the means?? I am sure that will be the argument. The answer is no, the killer of Dr. Tiller is no better than the provider of abortion.
Back to the doctor…all the interviews today will tell us what a great man he was. His family will no doubt mourn his death, and his friends will be saddened. But lets not forget that this man for 30 years practiced the killing of babies under the guise of womens rights. Even more disgusting is the fact that he was well known to be a provider of the barbaric practice of late term abortion. While his death is a tragedy to those close to him, lets not forget who he really was. And one more question that is really sticking in my craw here…what sort of church would allow this man to be a leader in the congregation??
UPDATE 1/29/10 from the Associated Press
Scott Roeder, the 51 year old man from Kansas City MO, was convicted of 1st degree murder in the slaying of Dr. George Tiller. Justice has been served.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Jurors swiftly convicted an abortion opponent of murder Friday for shooting to death one of the only doctors to offer late-term abortions in the U.S., a killing the gunman claimed was justified to save the lives of unborn children. The jury deliberated for just 37 minutes before finding Scott Roeder, 51, of Kansas City, Mo., guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder for putting a gun to the forehead of Dr. George Tiller on May 31 and pulling the trigger.
Defense attorney Mark Rudy described his case as helpless and hopeless.
“I’ve never seen anyone lay himself out as much as Mr. Roeder did,” Rudy said after the verdict, referring to his client’s confessions.
Roeder faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years when he is sentenced March 9. Prosecutor Nola Foulston said she would pursue a so-called “Hard 50″ sentence, which would require Roeder to serve at least 50 years before he can be considered for parole.
Tiller’s widow, Jeanne, and the rest of the family quickly exited the courtroom after the verdict. In a statement, Jeanne Tiller said “once again, a Sedgwick County jury has reached a just verdict
